When Yash Dayal made his IPL debut, Sunil Gavaskar jokingly mentioned on air that he had a word with Ashish Nehra, the Gujarat Titans head coach, enquiring if the young left-arm pacer had spoken to him. Nehra apparently responded that even if Yash wouldn't have made the effort, he wasn't going to stop speaking to him.

The exchange was indicative of Nehra's chirpy nature, but inadvertently also revealed a little truth about Dayal's persona.
The 24-year-old left-arm pacer is measured with words and reserved with his expressions. "It's not about me being unexcited, that's just how I am," he says to Cricbuzz when recollecting the moment he was picked in the IPL auction earlier in the year. But even he had a small moment of divergence last year when thinking about his idol. Away from the IPL, Dayal had his own moment of FOMO sitting at home. IPL 2021 was into its third day and several cricketers - from India and overseas - had their opportunities to showcase their skills in the world's biggest cricket league. Dayal, away from all the action, posted a video clip on his Facebook account with the caption 'How I bowled vs how I felt I bowled'. It was a clip of him knocking out the off pole of a Delhi opener followed by a clip of Zaheer Khan uprooting Hashim Amla's off stump in South Africa. "My only role model was Zaheer Khan," the shy pacer from Uttar Pradesh tells Cricbuzz. "I have never had a chance to meet him but everyone says that my bowling action resembles his. It's because he is the only bowler I have followed ever since I was a kid." Brought up in Allahabad, Dayal trained under Ghulam Murtuza, father of cricketer Ali Murtuza, at Bishop Johnson School, where his inclination towards the game and skills to excel in it were obvious since age 12. However, his father Chandrapal had also played cricket in his younger days while dabbling with his job at the Comptroller and Auditor General of India and was well aware that his son needed to make a quick decision if he was serious about the game that he picked up as a toddler. The eventual decision came when he realized that he needed to be self reliant. "I used to wake up late every day, but my father would ensure that everything is ready by the time I would wake up. My family has sacrificed a lot for me," Dayal admitted in an interview to Gujarat Titans. "Slowly, I realized that I needed to help myself as I move ahead in life and not have to rely on my father for help. It was at that point that I made up my mind of becoming a cricketer." Dayal didn't burst into the scene and set it alight immediately, his performances brewed gradually. Even through the tough structures and competitions of Uttar Pradesh, Dayal managed to make it through to the state team, becoming a significant part of their plans since 2018. fun88 Betting Id However, since November last year, his career picked up pace. Before all the limelight that the IPL brought, his performances were being noted and he was asked to be the net bowler for India ahead of the Kanpur Test against New Zealand and later when India's limited-overs side got struck by COVID-19 in February, he was quickly rushed to Ahmedabad in case the team needed backups. February 13, however, was even more special for the pacer. Fighting off bids from Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders, Gujarat Titans managed to bag the left-arm pacer for INR 3.2 crores. For someone set for his first IPL gig, Dayal wasn't too fussed. "This is the first time I was expecting to get picked following my performance in Vijay Hazare and Syed Mushtaq Ali. But I didn't expect to get picked for such a big price, surely. This is a big deal for me," he says with trademark restraint in words. As the tournament started, his wait continued. At the start, the Titans had their plans set. Mohammed Shami, Lockie Ferguson, Hardik Pandya, Rashid Khan and Varun Aaron were to be their frontline picks. After a couple of matches, however, Aaron got injured and that opened the door for Darshan Nalkande but he too played just two games. The opportunity for Dayal finally came in the clash against Rajasthan Royals. After conceding 33 runs in the first two overs, he finished with figures of 3-40. In four matches so far, he's picked seven wickets, at a strike rate of 13.70. After proving expensive against CSK and KKR, he returned miserly figures of 1 for 24 against SRH and clearly made the difference in a high-scoring encounter that saw Rashid leak 45, Ferguson go for 54, Shami being taken for 39 and Joseph giving away 35. That clash against SRH was also proof that Dayal had the ability to adapt to different situations. With three express pace bowlers in the side already, it would have been easy for Dayal to adopt a conservative approach. Instead, he was looking to match them. His ability to crank up the pace stood out, most notable was the delivery that had Andre Russell hurried by a short ball and getting caught at deep fine leg. That Dayal had overstepped only made it anti-climatic. He's also completed his quota of overs in all the matches so far, providing Pandya the cushion to not bowl himself and also ensuring that the captain has not felt the need to fall back on backup bowlers like Vijay Shankar and Rahul Tewatia. More significantly, he has bowled the tough overs - in the powerplay and in the death. In that star-studded line-up of international bowlers consisting of Mohammed Shami, Lockie Ferguson, Rashid Khan and Alzarri Joseph, Jsk247 Online Book Dayal's services are possibly not always needed but he's managed to hold his own. And in a short span, contrary to his off-field persona, Dayal has made ample noise to command attention.
